Located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range the road rises to 9,945 feet, the highest road in California and is closed often from November to May due to snow fall. The east side of the pass changes altitude rapidly while the west side gradually drops off; the road goes through Yosemite National Park. The east side from US Route 395 is the fun side consisting of a series of switchbacks, sweeping turns and great views.
